36 Types of Light Black

 , updated on
Light black are common real world colors that are perceived as black despite being significantly lighter than pure black. This term can feel a little contradictory and some might argue it doesn't exist whereby these colors are really dark grey. This isn't a good argument as grey implies a colorless black whereas many light blacks are tinged with color. For example, blackberries are perceived as black but are actually very dark purple that are nevertheless relatively light as a black color.

Many of the colors above don't feel black when compared to each other or to pure black. However, in the real world when they occur alongside lighter colors they can feel much darker.

How Light Does Black Go?

In the real world, some relatively light colors can be considered black. This often comes down to color constancy whereby we think of things as black so they are black. If you have a faded black t-shirt that has been washed many times you probably still think of it as black even if it's pretty much dark grey. Likewise, some materials such as wrought iron are considered black but aren't a particularly dark color.
