14 Types of Baby Blue

 , updated on
Baby blue is a powdery light blue. This color name originated in the mid-19th century and is based on the light greyish blue eyes of some newborn babies. This can occur due to a lack of melanin production in a newborn baby and the color of a baby's eyes can change in the first few months of life as they produce more of this pigment. The term "baby blues" is also old slang for eyes. Traditional baby blues were more of a realistic eye color but during the 20th century, this color shifted dramatically to be very bright. This was probably due to the bright color of products and fashions marketed under this color name.

In some cases, newborns have light blue or greyish eyes that become brown or green with time. This is due to increased melanin production as a baby grows.
Modern baby blue is a bright powdery color. This is often used in women's fashions and products for children. In some cases, these colors are lightly shifted towards purple however it is also common for baby blue colors to be slightly greenish and close to robins egg. The more traditional versions of this color are more dull and greyish.
