22 Types of Vermilion

 , updated on
Vermilion is a reddish orange that has much culture of use that dates back to antiquity. It was known to Ancient Rome, the Byzantine Empire and Ancient China. The pigment known as vermilion was originally produced from an insect in Europe but was later produced from a mineral known as cinnabar. As with so many old pigments, this is remarkably toxic. Vermilion was arguably the brightest pigment used by the ancient world such that it took on special meaning, particularly in the East, where it was commonly used to paint shrines, temples and temple gates. It is still considered an extremely auspicious color in many Asian cultures.

Modern examples of vermilion are often strongly shifted towards bright orange.
There is every indication that premodern vermilion was shifted more towards red such that it had more of a crimson quality. This is true of things made with the actual cinnabar pigment.
