150 Types of Black Color

 Paul Davis, updated on
Black is the color that results from the near complete absorption of visible light. This is perceived as a minimalistic and neutral color that can also make a strong statement whereby it can be perceived as formal, mysterious, arcane, gothic or powerful. In nature, black is associated with the night and the vastness of space. This is certainly what gives black its mysterious qualities. Black also has endless cultural associations with perhaps the most important being that it is considered the most formal color.

Is Black a Color?

It is occasionally argued that black isn't a color because it results from the absence of light whereas other colors result from different wavelengths of light.
This is based on the perception that color is some fundamental property of light which is not really the case. Color is a human perception that exists only in our minds. For example, white is the concept our mind generates when we are hit with infinitely colorful light from all wavelengths. Likewise, other colors, such as blue, are arbitrary concepts our minds and cultures have assigned to different wavelength bands in the spectrum of light.
There are too many oddities in color perception to think that color is some property of light that exists beyond our perception. For example, purple and violet colors are perceived as much the same. In fact, the screen you are reading this article on right now probably can't display true violet colors and only simulates it with red and blue.
The point here is that if you accept that color is a human perception, then black is a color because humans perceive it as a color and treat it as a color in every sense.

Notes

Arguing that black isn't a color is also kinda like arguing that zero isn't a number because it's the absence of a value rather than a value. This isn't considered a mathematically valid argument.
