50 Types of Dark Black

 Paul Davis, updated on
Dark black is a class of black colors that are fully dark such that they aren't perceived as having a tinge of color. Many colors that are named black have a faded quality such that they are less than fully dark. These aren't recommended for applications that are using black for its high contrast with white. For example, printing is usually black ink on white paper but in a digital environment, the opposite works just as well. Where you are going for high contrast with light colors, these dark black colors are ideal.

Why Dark Black?

Dark black is an aesthetically pleasing and practical color. That is to say that there are several pragmatic reasons to choose dark black:
  • High visibility in sunlight.
  • Low visibility at night.
  • Stain resistance in the sense that certain types of stain will not show on black.
  • High contrast with white and other light colors.
  • Useful for printing due to its contrast with white.
  • Black colors absorb the entire visible spectrum of light and minimize reflection.
  • Black colors may absorb more heat than other colors in many situations.
  • Perceived as a formal color.
  • As a neutral color, black doesn't clash with any other colors.
  • Perceived as minimalistic.
  • Black is not a commonly disliked color and is a good neutral color for product design. For example, many people dislike colors such as pink or brown. In rankings of least favorite color, black often gets zero votes.

Summary
