Fruit Colors

The bright colors of fruits attract seed dispersers as a signal of nutrition and sweetness. In many cases, these pigments also provide UV protection for the fruit.

Berry Colors

In botanical terms, berries are fruits derived from the ovary wall that contain seeds. This includes big fruits such as watermelons. In everyday language, berries are perceived as small bright fruits.

Greens & Yellows

Green is the most pervasive color in nature due to the use of chlorophyll by plants in the process of photosynthesis. These are often bright but may not be perceived as such in nature, due to the abundance of green. Yellow colors in nature are often based pigments known as carotenoids that can also play a role in photosynthesis.

Pinks & Purples

Pinks and purples are relatively rare in nature and are based on pigments such as anthocyanins and flavonoids.

Oranges

Natural orange colors are exceedingly rare in nature whereby they make occasional appearances in sunsets, fruits, vegetables and minerals such as rust.

Reds & Pinks

Natural reds and pinks are often found in flowers and fruits. The pigments that produce red such as anthocyanins, betalains and lycopene also have functional effects such as UV protection.
